If you’re a Nintendo Switch fan, you know its portability is a game-changer, yet Nintendo has limited its potential for streaming and media. Even though we’d all love a little Netflix or YouTube on our Switch, Nintendo has kept streaming options at bay. But what if I told you there’s a way to stream PC games on your Switch? Here’s where the Rainway app comes in—a free app promising exactly that.
What is the Rainway App?
Rainway, developed by Andrew Sampson, claims to let you stream your favorite PC games straight to your Nintendo Switch via a web browser, running at 60 fps. Imagine playing your Steam library right on your Switch without any extra gear. The app only requires a PC with a DirectX 11-compatible GPU, which is common in most modern gaming setups. And here’s the kicker—it’s supposed to be free, downloadable right from the Nintendo eShop.
Now, before we get too excited, there’s a catch: Sampson hasn’t revealed an official launch date yet, but he’s hopeful for testing on beta consoles soon. If it works smoothly, this app could be huge for gamers, transforming the Switch into a true multi-platform console. Just think—streaming games like Stardew Valley from your PC’s Steam account without paying extra for a Switch version. But if Nintendo sees this as cutting into their game sales, they might not be thrilled.
Potential Challenges for Rainway on the Nintendo Switch
Before we get our hopes too high, there are some big hurdles. While Sampson has expressed confidence about getting the app on the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo hasn’t yet given it an official nod. Some users on Reddit pointed out that saying it’ll be on the eShop and actually getting Nintendo’s green light are two very different things. And without Nintendo’s approval, the app won’t see the light of day on Switch.
Another question is performance. Streaming PC games over Wi-Fi can be tricky, especially when you’re on the go. Bandwidth is essential, and mobile networks might not be able to handle the load effectively. So, while we may see impressive tests on a home network, achieving smooth, high-performance gameplay over Wi-Fi in various settings might be challenging.
Rainway has the potential to shake things up in the gaming world. If it can deliver smooth, high-frame-rate streaming and get Nintendo’s approval, it would bring a new layer of versatility to the Switch. But that’s a big “if.” Until we get confirmation from Nintendo and see real-world tests that hold up, Rainway remains an exciting dream for now. I, for one, am keeping my fingers crossed.
